Starting Monday, the Leechburg Area School District is implementing a new early dismissal policy for students to follow.

Students with a scheduled early dismissal will be required to have a parent or guardian come to the school’s office and sign them out.

“For safety procedure, I want parents coming in the building to get on the computer, put their name in, what time they’re leaving, the reason for it,” Superintendent David Keibler said. “It’s really just something that should have been done years ago, and we didn’t want to wait any longer to make that change.”

Keibler said the new policy is being implemented as a general safety enhancement for students. He called the old process a safety issue that the district identified and fixed.

“The process has been that the kids just leave when they have an early dismissal,” Keibler said. “We have no record of who they leave with.”

Student drivers may leave without a parent or guardian present, provided a written excuse is submitted to the office before dismissal.
