As part of a comprehensive plan for Lower Burrell’s parks, the city is asking residents to take an online survey on what facilities and activities they want to see in the city’s five parks.

City parks include Braeview Fireman’s Park, Burrell Lake Park, Kotecki Memorial Park, Kinloch Fireman’s Park and Veteran’s Central Park.

The online survey must be completed by June 30. To take the survey, visit the survey website or cityoflowerburrell.com.

“What better way to have the best parks around than to get input from the people who use them?” Mayor John Andrejcik said.

The city is developing a Master Open Space, Recreation and Parks plan to identify the community’s desires for parks and recreation, said Amy Rockwell, city administrator.

“A lot of government work is following codes and legislation. This is the opportunity to be creative in our community, and we want to hear from you,” Rockwell said. “This is the opportunity for residents to participate in the planning for the growth of their community spaces.”

For Lower Burrell to be eligible for grants from the state Department of Community and Economic Development, it established a park study committee and is working on the plan with Environmental Planning and Design of Pittsburgh. The city received a grant to pay for most of the work on the plan.

The plan helps the city set priorities and provides the information needed to apply for grants for the parks and try to build projects into the city’s budget, Rockwell said.

Andrejcik said the parks committee is trying to reach as many residents as possible to take the survey as it works on the parks plan.

“I’m quite sure that all of their efforts will be rewarded when you finally see the fruits of their labor,” he said.
