Firefighters responded en masse Wednesday afternoon when a fire was reported at a two-story apartment building along Freeport Road in Harrison.

Sean Jones, fire chief of Citizens Hose Fire Rescue and EMS, said crews initially were called out shortly after 4 p.m. for smoke in an apartment.

Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from a first-floor unit and were able to identify it as a small kitchen fire.

Jones said the tenant was not home at the time, and all other residents were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The southbound lane of Freeport Road around the 2200 block was shut down, and traffic was snarled for several blocks. A portion of Burtner Road also was closed.

Crews cleared the scene about 6:45 p.m., and all residents were allowed to return to their units except for the one with the smoking kitchen, Jones said.
