New Kensington-Arnold kicks off homecoming with parade, festival

The New Kensington-Arnold School District kicked off three days of homecoming activities with a parade and festival Thursday evening.
The events came the day after the district shut down Valley High School, which Superintendent Chris Sefcheck said was prompted out of concerns after school-age students were involved in discharging a firearm in New Kensington.
Classes resumed Thursday with an increased police presence and supervision.
New Kensington police Chief Bob Deringer said Friday there were no issues at the parade or the festival that followed it.
“Both events had good turnouts,” he said.
Deringer said he had no updates on his department’s investigation of the shots fired incident. While police recovered five shell casings, no victims were found.
Valley’s homecoming game with Burrell, known as the “Battle of the Bypass,” begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The homecoming dance is scheduled for Saturday night at the Quality Inn in New Kensington.
There will be an increased police presence at both events, Deringer said.
