Officials in the New Kensington-Arnold School District are pursuing improvement projects at two of the district’s schools.
The school board voted to explore replacing the meal serving line at H.D. Berkey Elementary in Arnold and renovating restrooms at Valley Junior-Senior High School in New Kensington.
H.D. Berkey houses first and second grade students.
Principal Nicole Roberts did not know the age of the serving line at Berkey but said it’s condition is not good.
“There’s always problems with it,” she said.
The school board authorized the district administration to develop schematics and design drawings, advertise for bids, get building permits and take all other required steps to start the replacement of the meal serving line.
Roberts said the project will include moving it out from the kitchen to be more available to students.
The board also authorized the administration to pursue hiring an architect to develop schematics and design drawings for the renovation of the restrooms at the junior-senior high school.
Board President Tim Beckes said no work is imminent, describing the action as “exploratory” at this time.
The board wants to see what the options are, he said.
