To illustrate an upcoming New Kensington Camera Club workshop, past president Harry Shipman created a splash/water drop photo honoring Ukraine.

The camera club will offer a free public photo class on splash/water drop photography on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. in Suite 201 of the Pittsburgh Mills mall in Frazer.

Shipman, of New Kensington, named his recent splash/water drop photo “Destruction in Ukraine.”

Splash/water drop photography uses special techniques to freeze-frame water in midair or splashing.

Shipman created his Ukraine photo earlier this month.

“The water drops splashing looks a lot like an explosion, and I felt it could serve as a reminder of what Russia is inflicting on the people of Ukraine who only want to live in peace.”

The camera club’s free workshops help residents to be creative and learn more about photography techniques, said Joel Varga, president of the camera club.

The camera club offered four free public photography workshops earlier in the year, which were well attended, including a portrait workshop that drew a full house, Varga said.

“The whole purpose of the workshops is to show the community that photography can be fun if you learn a few simple tricks,” he said. The workshops educate budding photographers on composition, lighting and how to use the controls of their cameras.

Barry Sell, of Lower Burrell, an avid photographer and photography enthusiast, will lead the splash/water drop workshop.

The final workshop in the current camera club series, “Basics of Photography,” is set for April 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. Professional photographer John Beale will lead that workshop.

The camera club operates the Focus on the Arts gallery in the Pittsburgh Mills Galleria and displays and sells prints and paintings by members. More information is available on its Facebook page.
