New Kensington police investigating an attempted burglary early Thursday arrested a man who was wanted on a warrant and charged him with drug possession after an officer spotted him sitting in a running car nearby.

Deron Shaquille Hinton, 30, of Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood was charged with two felony counts of possession of drugs with the intent to deliver along with four misdemeanor drug counts and DUI.

Hinton was being detained in the Westmoreland County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond. He faces a preliminary hearing before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. on May 18, according to court records.

New Kensington police wrote in Hinton’s arrest papers that officers were investigating an attempted break-in on Franklin Street shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday when Hinton was seen sitting alone in an idling Nissan.

Hinton refused multiple orders to get out of the car and tried to drive away, police said.

An officer was able to get into the car and put on the brake to stop him from fleeing, the complaint said.

Police said Hinton appeared to be under the influence of drugs because he had trouble standing when they got him out of the car.

Investigators said there were two baggies of marijuana visible in the car.

Police said Hinton also had a scale and just under an ounce of crack cocaine in his right pocket and $490 in cash in his left pocket when he was taken into custody.

Hinton, 2 others suspects in child assault

An arrest warrant was issued for Hinton after he was charged by New Kensington police March 14 with felony aggravated assault and counts of simple assault and reckless endangerment.

Police said Hinton was one of three people who assaulted a child during an Easter egg hunt April 9 along Seventh Street Extension.

Police said video captured from a nearby home shows Hinton, another man and a woman pushing a boy to the ground and repeatedly kicking and punching him in the head, according to his arrest papers.

After the trio walks away, Hinton returns and punches the child in the head two more times. Police said the boy was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison for treatment. The complaint did not include the boy’s age or the extent of his injuries.

Also facing felony aggravated assault and other charges in connection with the incident are Krystae Lynn Oneal, 31, and Stacey Fitzgerald Oneal Jr., 34, both of New Kensington.

Both Oneals and Hinton face preliminary hearings on the charges before Pallone on Thursday, May 18, according to the docket.
