A preliminary hearing for a man charged with attempted murder in a May shootout on Fifth Avenue in New Kensington has been scheduled for July.

Deontae Delshaw Boyd Jr., 21, of Rankin will have a hearing July 7 before New Kensington District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr.

Boyd was scheduled for a hearing Thursday, but it could not be held because Pallone was not available, his office said.

In addition to attempted murder, Boyd is charged with aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest. He was denied bail and is being held in the Westmoreland County jail.

His attorney, Angela Rene Carsia, could not be reached for comment.

In a criminal complaint, police said they heard the shots fired about 4:45 p.m. May 23 in the 1100 block of Fifth Avenue from their station at nearby city hall on 11th Street.

The shooting scene was in the area of Westmoreland County Community College’s New Kensington Education Center, prompting it to be locked down.

Police said video surveillance showed a vehicle slowing down on Fifth Avenue while Boyd was standing in a nearby parking lot.

Bystanders are seen ducking as though they were being shot at.

Another unknown person also standing in the parking lot returned fired, after which Boyd is seen drawing a gun and pointing it toward the vehicle as he runs through a courtyard.

Police said they recovered about 10 .22-caliber casings from where Boyd was standing.

Police said Boyd fled the area as a passenger in a car, which an officer stopped after seeing it in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue.

Police said Boyd ran from the car and was seen discarding a firearm, a .22-caliber Uzi replica, under a vehicle before he was apprehended.

New Kensington police have not responded to requests for information regarding the other two gunmen.
