A new president has been named to lead Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison.
Allegheny Health Network tapped Dr. Mark Rubino to head the campus. Rubino is the president of Forbes Hospital in Monroeville.
He will maintain that responsibility as he also leads the 188-bed acute care hospital in the Natrona Heights section of Harrison.
Rubino succeeds Dr. Vicenta Gaspar-Yoo, who is moving to a networkwide leadership role as AHN’s senior vice president of Care Continuum and Transitions.
Rubino will take the role effective May 7.
Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network noted that as the network’s two easternmost hospitals, Forbes and Allegheny Valley will be “strategically linked,” although the hospitals will remain separate entities. Forbes Hospital has 315 beds.
Rubino, a practicing gynecologist, has served as Forbes’ president since 2016.
During his tenure, Rubino helped to steer multiple capital investment projects, including a $17 million perioperative expansion and a $35 million cancer and imaging center.
At Forbes, Rubino served as the chief medical officer before being moved into the role as president.
He was part of a leadership overhaul at the health system that placed physicians at the top. The changes were part of a growing industry belief at the time that those who already practice medicine can better helm hospital operations.
AHN President James Benedict described Rubino as a seasoned clinical executive, strong hospital leader and a community champion “attuned to the diverse health care needs” of the area.
“These changes are closely aligned with our Living Health model and our market-centric approach, which will enable AHN to more effectively and efficiently coordinate care for the patients who live and work in these communities,” Benedict said in a statement.
As an obstetrics and gynecology doctor with AHN Women, Rubino provides care for birth control methods, breastfeeding, contraception, family planning, infertility, labor and delivery and gynecologic surgery. He went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and received a master of medical management at Carnegie Mellon University.
Rubino wasn’t immediately available for comment Friday.
