When Longwood at Oakmont hired Emma Winkler, the retirement community in Plum gained more than simply a part-time dining server.

The Cheswick resident took the initiative to help organize Dancing Through the Decades, a spring prom for the residents.

“Witnessing the sheer happiness the prom brought to the residents — they still reminisce about it — and seeing the genuine joy on their faces, I felt compelled to re-create this experience and involve more young people,” Emma said. “I wanted others to witness firsthand the incredible impact such experiences can have.”

She and Grier Primrose, both juniors at Oakland Catholic High School, established a club called Helping Hands. They and their classmates are focused on volunteerism and community service, with plans for “monthly events aimed at contributing to diverse communities across the Pittsburgh area,” according to Emma.

“Our collective aim is to create a tangible and positive impact in the lives of others, fostering hope and encouragement through our dedicated efforts,” she said.

The students’ efforts brought another event to Longwood at Oakmont, a Winter Wonderland Formal that more than 100 residents attended on Dec. 2. Helping Hands members arranged for food, drinks, refreshments, raffle baskets, a DJ and a dance session.

Eight or so volunteers helped set up everything on the evening before the event, and 12 participated in the formal, dancing and talking with residents in addition to providing refreshments.

“I firmly believe that the dance didn’t just bring joy to the residents,” Emma said. “It left a lasting impression on our volunteers, generating a sense of positivity and contributing to a truly enriching experience for everyone involved.”
