A Pittsburgh man already awaiting a preliminary hearing on domestic violence charges was arrested Thursday and charged with shooting the same woman earlier this month in a Wilkinsburg apartment complex, according to police.
Andrai Russell, 20, of Pittsburgh’s Windgap neighborhood, was arrested after two weeks on the run at the Sandalwood Apartments in Allegheny Township.
Russell was wanted for a number of felony charges related to the shooting of his pregnant girlfriend.
The shooting happened Sept. 5 at an apartment complex on Center Street.
According to the criminal complaint against Russell, police responded to the 911 call for a woman shot about 12:20 p.m. Officers arrived and found a pregnant woman to shot in her abdomen. She told police Russell had shot her and he was still in her apartment.
Police did not find Russell in the apartment, according to the complaint. They found a semi-automatic handgun in the bedroom along with several live rounds.
Police said security footage from the apartment showed the injured woman collapse on the third floor, and another camera showed a clear shot of Russell running from the same area.
Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies received a tip Russell was staying with friends at the Sandalwood Apartments on Thursday, according to Chief Deputy Kevin Kraus. Deputies, along with Allegheny Township officers, found Russell at the complex, and he was taken into custody without incident.
Russell is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault of an unborn child, receiving stolen property and a firearm violation. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh where he is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
Court records show he was also awaiting a preliminary hearing on 2019 charges of simple assault and strangulation. Police noted that those charges stemmed from an alleged assault on the same woman.
