Plum School District nurses, bus aides, police and paraprofessionals recently participated in a first aid and related emergency response course in preparation for the new school year.

Plum EMS Director of Operations Brian Maloney said 60 staffers were updated on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and Narcan distribution.

The session took place Tuesday, Aug. 17 at the high school. The 2021-22 school year started Thursday, Aug. 19.

“It was a great group of people,” Maloney said. “Everybody participated (and had) great energy. It was obvious from them and others at the school (that) they are excited about the school year to begin.”

The course was part of an ongoing partnership between the district and Plum EMS.

“I can’t speak highly enough of what they do and the great relationship they have with the public safety in the borough,” Maloney said. “They go above and beyond to make sure it’s a safe place.”

Superintendent Brendan Hyland commended Maloney and his crew for their efforts.

“He has been a tremendous support to our district,” Hyland said. “This helps to keep everyone safe, students, employees, and visitors. In addition, we are working with the Plum Police Department to set up other events to continue to build a strong partnership with the borough safety personnel.”

CPR classes are also offered to teachers every couple years.

Plum EMS hosts CPR classes at its station at 6 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at 1990 Old Mine Road.
