A woman from Ohio has been charged with attempted homicide after police said she shot her boyfriend multiple times Wednesday night during an argument at his home in Plum and then chased him down the street with a kitchen knife when he tried to flee.
Police say Crystal Marie Veasey, 38, of Broadview Heights, Ohio, apparently fired seven shots — including two bullets that went through the home’s exterior wall and into a neighbor’s home where four people live, according to her arrest papers. No injuries were reported in that home.
Veasey was charged with felony counts of attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault and a lesser charge of tampering with evidence, according to the criminal complaint on the incident.
Plum police responded to a 911 call shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Emerald Drive for a man who had been shot, according to authorities.
Officers found the man with gunshot wounds to the chest, shoulder and hand. He was taken by ambulance in critical condition to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh, where he underwent surgery for his wounds, the complaint said.
Before going to the hospital, the victim was able to identify Veasey as the shooter, the complaint said. Authorities say the victim told police she traveled to his house from Ohio on Wednesday and they had been arguing because they were going through a breakup.
The man told investigators that he asked Veasey to leave his home, but when he turned his back on her he heard gunshots ring out, the complaint said.
He said he turned around to find the woman pointing a gun at him before firing several more shots, including one that struck him in the hand. The couple got into a physical altercation before he was able to run out of the house, according to police.
Veasey then grabbed a kitchen knife as she left the home and chased after the man, police said.
A witness told police they saw a man running from the house with a woman running after him holding a knife, according to the complaint. Police said the witness told them the woman then went to a white Mercedes Benz and placed a bag in the trunk.
Police said they located Veasey walking several miles away, along Kerr Road in Plum, and that she was suffering from superficial cuts to her legs.
She was treated at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville and then released into police custody, according to the complaint. Her car was impounded.
Police obtained a search warrant for the home, where they found seven spent shell casing from a .45-caliber handgun, the complaint said.
While processing the scene, police learned that two of the shots fired by Veasey went through a wall and into the neighbor’s home.
Police said records show the victim also owns a .45-caliber pistol, but no weapon was found in the house.
Veasey was taken to the Allegheny County Jail in Pittsburgh awaiting a preliminary hearing Thursday .
