Portions of Sixth Avenue in Tarentum were shut down Monday for work by Peoples natural gas company crews.

Spokesman Nick Paradise said crews were closing off a gas line in the area.

The road is closed from near the Marathon gas station and Gatto’s to the intersection at Lock Street.

The construction might cause headaches for motorists who are traveling toward the borough from the Tarentum Bridge.

Drivers are not able to make a right turn at the foot of the bridge, rather, they have to turn left and skirt under the bridge to First Avenue.

There already are extra vehicles using the bridge and roads in the area because of the extended closure of the New Kensington Bridge. Motorists have been using the Tarentum Bridge as an alternate route.

“The expectation is that work should only last a day,” Paradise said.

Further information on the project was not available.
