Sarah Burk and her dog, Diesel, travel Crooked Creek on June 19, 2020.

The state Fish and Boat Commission is closing the Rosston boat launch in Manor Township at Crooked Creek and the Allegheny River for repairs beginning Monday, Aug. 29, through Sept. 23.

The commission is building a new launch ramp and improving the parking lot, said Mike Parker, commission press secretary.

Motorized and other boats bound for the Allegheny River can launch from the Fish and Boat Commission’s other nearby ramps at the Cowanshannock Creek access, which is upstream from Crooked Creek in Kittanning, and the Freeport access, which is downstream.

A Crooked Creek kayak and canoe launch is available to the public at the Crooked Creek Recreational Area in Manor and Bethel townships. The launch is at the site’s Outflow Recreation Area at the end of Outflow Road.

The launch closes when water levels are high. On Thursday, the launch was closed because of high water, which is expected to recede. The public can check Crooked Creek’s Facebook page for updates, said Christian Clendenning, a park ranger at Crooked Creek Lake, which is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Paddlers using the Corps’ launch at the outflow area must wear a life jacket, he added.

Motorboats also can access the ramp for the 300-acre Crooked Creek Lake from Boat Ramp Road.
