Body of 3-year-old boy recovered from Allegheny River in Armstrong County

The body of a 3-year-old boy was found Saturday afternoon by dive teams in the Allegheny River in Armstrong County.

Dwight Lee Dinsmore, 3, of Yatesboro was recovered from the water about 2:40 p.m., about a mile south of Lock No. 6 in Bethel, Armstrong County Coroner Brian K. Myers said.

“The death is being ruled an accident,” Myers said. “There are no further details at this time.”

The child was found after a nearly 24-hour search, with officials setting up a command post in a heavily forested area near a sandbar just off Kelly Station Road in Bethel. The boy had been camping with his family near the river, according to initial reports.

The coroner and state police, which led the search, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Officials provided few details about the situation.

Crews resumed their search about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, starting with a group briefing at a command post set up near Kelly Station Road, an Armstrong County 911 shift commander said.

Dozens of police, fire and ambulance units as well as dive teams and special operations task forces from across the region had responded when the child was reported missing about 3:20 p.m. Friday.

The search drew teams from as far south as Murrysville, with teams fanning out for several miles, from Bethel toward Leechburg. Bloodhounds also were used by officials in hopes of tracking the child. The search was called off temporarily before 9 p.m. Friday as thunderstorms threatened rescue workers with heavy bouts of lightning and winds knocked down trees and power lines.
