A Catholic church critically damaged by Mother Nature three years ago is undergoing restoration and repairs in New Kensington.
St. Mary of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church sustained more than $3 million in damage on April 8, 2020, when an EF-1 tornado with wind gusts of up to 100 mph traveled through parts of New Kensington.
The church was closed for more than two years afterward.
Crews from Volpatt Construction, Harris Masonry and David M. Maines Roofing began work March 20 to install a new roof and replace a steeple that was blown off.
The bell tower was so badly damaged it had to be removed.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-July, said project superintendent Dick Brant of Volpatt Construction.
The church reopened Nov. 27 with a dedication ceremony celebrated by Bishop Larry J. Kulick.
Built in 1913 and restored in 1993, the church counts about 350 families as members.
Mass is celebrated at 7:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sundays.
