South Buffalo appoints 1st female supervisor
For the first time in its 177-year history, South Buffalo has a female supervisor.
Karen Babilon was appointed to the board Monday after an unexpectedly competitive process that saw four candidates come forth, including another woman.
“Normally, when there’s an opening, no one wants to do it,” Supervisor Paul Bergad said.
Babilon will serve through 2025 in the seat once held by Jay Powell, who resigned from the board in July after moving from the township.
As the first woman in the role, Babilon said she is honored but believes that diverse experiences bring balance to a community “more so than our genders.”
This position is Babilon’s first foray into public life after 20 years living in South Buffalo with her husband, Joe. Now that their two sons have left home, Babilon said, she is ready to apply her skills and “make a difference.”
The registered nurse has worked for O’Hara-based Grane Healthcare and its subsidiaries for 17 years, gathering experience in project management and regulatory compliance.
She currently works as a senior clinical business analyst for GraneRx, a pharmacy and medication management provider. In her past work as a consultant, she ensured that 12 skilled nursing facilities met state and federal standards on emergency preparedness, maintenance, social services and more.
She also is involved in local food assistance programs, such as Lasagna Love and Feeding Freeport.
“With my vast experience and commitment to our community, I felt that I could use my skill set to benefit the township,” Babilon said.
As supervisor, Babilon said she will prioritize economic growth and public safety. She expects her vision for the township to come into greater focus once she gets up to speed.
“I think, really, for the first several months, I’m just going to take it in and see where I can help out,” Babilon said.
