Springdale officials hope to begin work next year to replace water lines along three streets in the borough.
The borough this week was awarded just under $1 million for a replacement project on Orchard, Logan and Moyhend streets, Councilman Dan Copeland said.
Springdale also plans on replacing another street’s water line with the funding, Copeland said. The fourth roadway has not been determined.
The funding comes from the statewide Local Share Account, which draws its revenue from the Race Horse Development and Gaming Act. It’s financed by the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
Council President Mike Ziencik thanked state Sen. Lindsey Williams, D-West View, and Rep. Mandy Steele, D-Fox Chapel, for helping the borough to obtain the funding, which he said has been a long time coming.
“There’s been many years where we’ve gotten nothing whatsoever,” Ziencik said. “It’s been nice to accomplish that, and they probably had a good hand in getting it.”
Copeland said the projects will be completed next year. He hopes work can start in January or February.
“I’d like to start working on getting these lines done as soon as possible,” he said.
The lines on those streets are older and deteriorating, Copeland said. They will be replaced with a plastic 6-inch line that will increase volume for fire hydrants.
There also will be new water taps on those streets. Going with a plastic line will be cheaper and provides better taste for the water, he said.
“You’re going to get a longer service out of them, and it’s going to get rid of the sediment that builds up in the metallic lines,” Copeland said.
