When a Vandergrift man called police to report his Jeep had been stolen, he was the one who ended up being arrested.
State police say Calvin Walter Kendall Jr., 44, of the 100 block of Longfellow Street is a convicted sex offender who did not report to police that he purchased the vehicle in February, as required under the state’s Megan’s Law.
According to police, Kendall was convicted of sexual assault more than a decade ago.
He was placed on the state’s lifetime offenders list for sex offenders.
He was released from custody on a $10,000 unsecured bond to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 5 before District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec. He is charged with a felony count of failing to meeting the state’s registration requirements for sex offenders.
Police wrote in a criminal complaint that Kendall called state police June 23 to report the theft of his 1998 Jeep Cherokee SUV, which was registered with the state as an antique vehicle.
Kendall was convicted of sexual assault in 2010 and has been required to register as a lifetime sex offender since then, according to the state police database of sex offenders.
In March 2011, Kendall was sentenced to 12 months of probation and four months of electronic monitoring after pleading guilty to a felony count of failing to register as a sex offender, according to court records.
In addition to regularly checking in with state police, sex offenders must notify authorities when they change their address or job or buy a vehicle, among other things.
No information was available about whether the stolen Jeep was recovered.
