Colfax Elementary School in Springdale will be coming down at a cost well below what district officials had anticipated.

The Allegheny Valley School Board on Tuesday approved a $404,000 base bid from Pine-based Kane Specialty Group LLC to perform asbestos abatement and demolish the 99-year-old building, which sits off Colfax Street.

District officials had anticipated the abatement and demolition to cost $1.6 million. With the savings, the board also directed administrators to solicit proposals for project management services related to the project.

Colfax closed in 2018 and has sat vacant since. The district has not said what it plans for the property.

Kane was the lowest of 13 bids for abatement and demolition of the building.

The regulations for the demolition include erecting a fence around the site. No explosives will be used in the demolition.

Once the contract is signed, Kane and the school district will schedule a project timeline. District officials have said they would keep the community updated with the demolition plans.
