Smoke billows from the charred remains of a Kia SUV that caught fire in Harrison on Tuesday.

The quiet of Harrison’s Pacific Avenue neighborhood was interrupted Tuesday when a Kia SUV caught fire around 11 a.m. and quickly became engulfed in flames.

Harrison police briefly shut down the 1400 block of Pacific as crews from Citizens Hose Fire-Rescue-EMS and other companies doused the fire. A Citizens Hose ambulance was on scene, though no one appeared to be injured.

Crews had extinguished the fire by around noon. The charred remains of the vehicle were hauled away shortly after.

Last September, Kia and Hyundai issued a recall of 3.3 million vehicles in the U.S. because they were known to catch fire, including while parked and turned off.

According to a press release from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the vehicles’ anti-lock brake system could leak brake fluid and cause an electrical short circuit.

Kia’s warning applied to 10 models manufactured between 2010 and 2017. The automaker has offered to repair these vehicles.

It’s unclear if the recall applied to the SUV in Harrison.
