Crews with J.F. Shea Construction remove the existing expansion dams on the Tarentum end of the Tarentum Bridge on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, the first day of a long-term closure of the bridge for rehabilitation work.

The Tarentum Bridge reopened in both directions a half-day earlier than planned, much to the relief of many drivers headed through the Alle-Kiski Valley on Sunday afternoon.

PennDOT officials had postponed the reopening of the westbound lane linking New Kensington to Tarentum until 6 a.m. Monday after a car crashed in the work zone last weekend and damaged equipment.

Construction work on the bridge began June 9, prompting lengthy delays for commuters and spurring concerns for emergency responders and ambulances in the area.

The eastbound lane headed from Tarentum to New Kensington reopened June 13.

The work, led by contractor J.F. Shea Construction, was part of a $3.2 million rehabilitation project.

Westbound single-lane restrictions may continue to happen periodically through the project’s completion this fall.
