National Night Out celebrations scheduled

Three National Night Out celebrations are scheduled this week in the Alle-Kiski Valley.

• West Leechburg: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the fireman’s recreation hall pavilion and grounds, 1116 Gosser St. There will be food trucks, a basket auction and children’s activities. Entertainment will be the Kiski Valley Community Band and Brad Kerezsturi. The event is sponsored by the borough Crime Watch.

• North Apollo: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at North Apollo Church of God, 507 20th St. There will be food, music, emergency vehicles, and a tug-of -war between the police and fire departments. Sponsored by the Kiski Township Police Department. Details: 724-478-3357.

• Northmoreland Park, Allegheny Township: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pavilion 8. Rain or shine. There will be local businesses, representatives from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Police Academy, entertainment, food, local police departments, first responders and children’s activities. Sponsored by CSAY Westmoreland and the Westmoreland Drug and Alcohol Commission Inc.


Freeport Theatre Festival to present new play

The Freeport Theatre Festival will present “The General and Mark Twain” at 7 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays Aug. 9 to 25 at the theater located on the Steele Family Farm, 2498 White Cloud Road in Allegheny Township.

Written and directed by Mike Firek, the play is about the unlikely friendship between Mark Twain and Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Tickets are $15; members of the military and senior citizens, $12; students, $10. Reservations are recommended. The facility is air conditioned and wheelchair accessible. Free parking is available.

The local history department at Community Library of Allegheny Valley, 1522 Broadview Blvd., Harrison, offers the use of the MyHeritage Research Database that includes billions of historical documents for nearly 50 countries, historical photographs, public records, indexes and more.

Aug. 14: Our Lady, Queen of Peace and St. James parishes will sponsor a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from the St. James Church parking lot in Apollo. Harrison 

Monday through Friday: The Natrona Playground Summer Camp for children serves a free lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays at the playground, 10 River Ave. Free classes will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Programs this week are: Tuesday, animal athletes with Allegheny Land Trust; Wednesday, rocks and geology with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History; and Thursday, making slime with Mad Science.

Tuesday: The Highlands High School Marching Band will host a pie night and show preview at 7 p.m. at Golden Rams Stadium, Natrona Heights. Cost: $5, includes slice of pie and beverage. Fall sport seniors will be honored and there will be food trucks. Rain date: Wednesday.

Tuesday: The Accordion Club is seeking new players of all ages. Meetings are from 6 to 8 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at 6003 Freeport Road. Details: 724-236-0665.

Sept. 14: A happy hour cash bash will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 894 Veterans Lane. Aug. 16: Westmoreland County Marines No. 1416 is selling tickets for a $1,000 meat raffle. The winning number will be the 7 p.m. Pennsylvania Lottery three-digit number. The winner receives $1,000 worth of meat from Sprankle’s Markets, a four-burner Char-Broil grill, grill cover, stainless steel utensils and a 20-pound propane tank. Cost: $10, includes two numbers. Tuesdays: The Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania hosts a Parkinson’s wellness class from 1:15 to 2 p.m. at Valley Points Family YMCA, 800 Constitution Blvd. The program is a mix of exercises designed to help someone manage their Parkinson’s Disease more effectively and includes aerobic and resistance training, stretching, balance, facial and voice exercises. Through August 31: Kerr Memorial Museum, 402 Delaware Ave., Oakmont, is featuring an exhibit of elegant fashions of the late 1800s to the Roaring ‘20s at the museum.
