Opportunities available to help senior citizens

Open Your Heart to a Senior is looking for volunteers to help our older neighbors.

People are needed to drive to doctor appointments, shop for groceries and make calls to check on and say hello to people who are alone. To offer your time and for information, call 724-205-6282 or email oyhs@wfspa.org.

Vandergrift Meals On Wheels is looking for regular and substitute volunteers to help with driving and delivering to clients.

Today: Apollo Hose Company No. 2 will have bingo at 8 p.m. at the firehall, 325 N. Fourth St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Please note the times. Cost: $25, includes all games except the optional quickie. Full kitchen available. Details: 724-478-4831.

Apollo/East Vandergrift

Thursday: Apollo Area Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the WCTU Building, 317 N. Second St. New members welcome.

Jan. 8: St. James and Our Lady, Queen of Peace parishes will sponsor a bus trip to Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from the St. James Church parking lot and stay at the casino for five hours. Cost: $30, includes $20 free play. State-issued photo ID required to receive free play. Reservations: 724-478-4958.

Brackenridge

Wednesday: The American Legion will host a New Years Day super bingo at 5 p.m. at the post, 845 First Ave. Doors open at 3 p.m. Cost: $45 for the base package; extra packages, $30. There will be no magic number or all-nighter games. Regular games pay $110, specials pay $250 and the jackpot game will pay $2,250. Public welcome.

Jefferson Township

Thursday: Bingo will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion, 754 N. Pike Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. The kitchen will be open. Proceeds benefit post and auxiliary projects.

New Kensington

Thursday and Saturday: The Community Clothes Closet, 1129 Kenneth Ave., will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Items available include clothing for all members of the family, shoes, linens, purses and handbags. Household items, dishes, appliances and books will no longer be accepted. Donations welcome during business hours only. Do not leave donations at the door.

Springdale

Jan. 9: Springdale Free Public Library will have a Family Fun Night at 6 p.m. at the library, 331 School St. Law Enforcement Appreciation Day will be celebrated. There will be a craft and a visit with a local police officer. Reservations required. Reservations: 724-274-9729.

Winfield 

Thursday: The Matrona Family Resource Center at Cabot Church, 707 Winfield Road, will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. New and gently used clothing in sizes preemie through 10/12 will be available, as well as strollers, car seats, toys and more.
