Night at the Races planned by AKV Back the Blue

AKV Back the Blue will host a night at the races Feb. 15 at Lower Burrell Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1601 Wildlife Lodge Road.

Doors open at 4 p.m. and races will begin at 5. Tickets are $20 and include a derby hat contest for men and women, a grazing table and a chance for a door prize. There will be a DJ, chuck-a-luck and cash bar and the kitchen will be open. Horses will be available for $20 each. Tables can be reserved for $25.

NK cat rescue asking for donations

Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue in New Kensington is asking for donations of paper pellet cat litter, any brand of canned cat food, bleach, paper towels and kitchen trash bags.

Buffalo Township

Wednesday: Sarver Momco, formerly known as MOPS, will meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Christ Community Fellowship, 160 Singleton Road. This is a non-denominational faith-based group for mothers of children in 12th grade and younger and those who are expecting. Reservations required. East Vandergrift 

Feb. 14: Our Lady, Queen of Peace Parish is selling tickets for a Sweetheart cash raffle. The winning numbers will be the 1:30 and 7 p.m. Pennsylvania Lottery Pick-4 numbers on Valentine’s Day. Each winner will receive $1,000 and a $100 gift certificate to Sweetlane Chocolate Shop in Vandergrift. Cost: $10, includes two numbers. Wednesdays: The Blessing Closet, formerly known as the Thrift Store Ministry, at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All items are free, but donations will be accepted. Items available include clothing of all sizes, bedding and window items. Donations of clothing, shoes and boots welcome; must be laundered and free from smoke and pet hair. Wheelchair accessible. Harrison

Tuesdays: Community Library of Allegheny Valley will host a story time for children age 3 to 5 at 10 a.m. at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. No reservations required. Details: 724-226-3491.

Wednesday: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Wednesday: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who are not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Wednesday: The Becky’s Closet community clothing store at Faith Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Cost: adult tops and bottoms, 50 cents; children’s clothing, 25 cents. Please bring small bills and your own bags. Donations welcome during these hours. Everyone welcome.

Tuesdays: A wellness class for those with Parkinson’s disease is offered from 1:15 to 2 p.m. at Valley Points Family YMCA, 800 Constitution Blvd. Sponsored by the Parkinson’s Foundation of Western Pennsylvania, the program is a mix of exercises designed to help manage Parkinson’s Disease and includes aerobic and resistance training, stretching, balance, facial and voice exercises. Tuesday: Alcoholics Anonymous will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Presbyterian Church, 305 Allegheny St. The Sunday group has been discontinued.

Wednesday: Highlands Family Center, 415 E. Fourth Ave., will offer a free farmers market from noon to 5 p.m. while supplies last. There are no income guidelines and everyone is welcome. The event is the first Wednesday of each month.
