Volunteers needed to prepare income tax returns

AARP Foundation is seeking volunteers for its Tax-Aide program in Springdale and Westmoreland County.

Positions to be filled include tax return preparers, client facilitators who help organize tax documents and appointment schedulers. No experience is required.

Training will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 9 to 13 at Westmoreland County Community College in New Kensington and in January at the Youngwood campus of WCCC. To register and for information, call 888-227-7669 or visit aarpfoundation.org/taxaidevolunteer.


Laundry products available to those in need

First Baptist Church of Tarentum will offer a new laundry closet outreach to those who need laundry products.

Detergent, bleach and scented beads will be distributed to anyone in need after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at the church, 410 E. Third Ave. The program will continue on the fourth Sunday of each month.


Free rides available to medical appointments

Wesley Family Services offers free transportation for those 18 and older from their homes to medical facilities within New Kensington, Arnold, Lower Burrell and parts of Vandergrift.

Rides are available from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays except holidays. One-way and round-trip rides are available.

Today: A praise and worship service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Tomb, 1821 Fifth Ave. The Al Adams Band will lead worship.

Saturday: St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church will have a pop-up pierogi sale from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church social hall, 1610 Kenneth Ave. Frozen and a limited amount of fresh pierogi will be available. Varieties: potato & cheese and sauerkraut, $14 per dozen. No orders will be accepted. Sales will be first come, first served.

Tuesday: A free community Thanksgiving meal will be from will be served from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tomb, 1821 Fifth Ave. Sponsored by St. George Orthodox Church.

Buffalo Township

East Vandergrift

Dec. 6: Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish is selling tickets for a St. Nicholas Day lottery raffle. Winning numbers will be the first drawn Pennsylvania Daily Pick 3 numbers at 1:30 and 7 p.m. on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6. Winners will each receive $1,000 and a $100 gift certificate to Donghia Lumber Company in Vandergrift. Cost: $10, includes two numbers. Freeport

Harrison

Vandergrift

Saturday: A free black light puppet show featuring the Let It Shine youth puppet ministry from Bethel United Methodist Church, Lower Burrell, will be at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 134 Custer Ave. Refreshments will be served afterward. Washington Township   

Nov. 28: The Kiski Valley Turkey Trot 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run to benefit Kiski Area Youth Network will be Thanksgiving, Nov. 28 at Kunkle Park, 985 Pine Run Church Road. Serious and casual runners and walkers of all ages welcome. Proceeds benefit Kiski Area Youth Network. Registration: kvturkeytrot.com.

Today: Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company will have bingo at 7 p.m. at the firehall, 4078 Route 66. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and sales start at 6 p.m. Free coffee. The kitchen will be open. Players must be at least 18 or accompanied by an adult.

West Deer

Saturday : The deacons of East Union Church, in cooperation with the West Deer Food Bank, will distribute Thanksgiving baskets to local families in need.
