HOPE Center accepting household donations

The Alle-Kiski HOPE Center is seeking donations of household items for the clients it serves. The center provides free and confidential services to survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Items most needed include bath sets containing a shower curtain, bathmat, toothbrush holder and soap dish, underwear, slippers in all sizes; hairbrushes, combs, lotion, lip balm, curling irons and new makeup.

Donations are accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the administration office, 500 E. Eighth Ave., Tarentum. If you are ordering online, request delivery to this address. For details, call 724-224-1100 or visit akhopecenter.org.


Children’s pajama party fundraiser planned Dec. 6

The Freeport Area High School Swim Team will sponsor a parents night out Polar Express pajama party from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 409 Sarver Road, Buffalo Township

Children age 3 to 10 who are potty trained are welcome. Children should wear pajamas and bring a blanket to sit on. Pizza and popcorn will be served as the children watch “The Polar Express.” Cost is $25 for the first child and $15 for additional children from the same family.

People

Dr. Heidi Phillips, formerly of New Kensington, was named the first Dr. John A. Coyne Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine. A 1993 graduate of Valley High School, New Kensington, where she was valedictorian, she completed her surgical training and veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania and is now the section head of the University of Illinois hospital’s small animal soft tissue surgery service. The daughter of Rene and Gisela Phillips of New Kensington, Dr. Phillips lives in Champaign, Ill., with her husband and daughter.

Today: St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church will have a pop-up pierogi sale from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church social hall, 1610 Kenneth Ave. Frozen and a limited amount of fresh pierogi will be available. Sunday: Sons of the American Legion will serve an all-you-can-eat community breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon in the American Legion, 845 E. First Ave. Cost: $10; younger than 10, $6.

East Vandergrift

Dec. 6: Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish is selling tickets for a St. Nicholas Day lottery raffle. Winning numbers will be the first drawn Pennsylvania Daily Pick 3 numbers at 1:30 and 7 p.m. on St. Nicholas Day, Dec. 6. Monday: A fundraiser to benefit the Riverview High School wrestling team, which includes athletes from Springdale Jr.-Sr. High School, will be from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Primanti Brothers, 6 Anchor Drive. Harrison
