Kiski Valley museums to host open house tour Sunday

Four Kiski Valley museums will host a free open house tour on Sunday. Events will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at Apollo Museum and Historical Society, Hyde Park Museum and Historical Society, Leechburg Museum and Historical Society and Victorian Vandergrift Museum and Historical Society.

Locations and exhibits will include:

• Apollo, 317 N. Second St. – Griftlo Park, woolen mill and a 1970s train setup.

• Hyde Park, Main Street – early street maps with business locations.

• Leechburg, 118 First St. – artwork of Peter Charles Bersharo.

• Vandergrift, 184 Sherman Ave. – 13825 Ahrens Fox fire truck with antique apparatus.

Free shuttle service donated by Byers Taxi Service will be available from all museums. Start your tour at any location. Pick-ups will be on the hour at the Leechburg and Vandergrift museums and on the half hour at Hyde Park and Apollo museums.


NK-Arnold SD to recognize distinguished alumni

The New Kensington-Arnold School District is seeking nominations for its 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Consideration is given to candidates who have made outstanding contributions in areas such as athletics, business, education, journalism, law, manufacturing, medicine, performing arts, public service, science and the trades.

Nominees must be graduates of Valley High School, New Kensington High School or Parnassus High School who have achieved an exceptional level of success within their field or profession and had a positive impact on the broader community after leaving high school. They need to be willing to accept the honor and agree to have their name, picture and a brief description of their accomplishments made public. Nominees may be recognized posthumously.

Fund aids animals with health problems

The Fur-ever Mine Fund at Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley covers the cost of medical care for cats and dogs that are admitted to the shelter.

Some animals arrive in good health, but many others have medical problems that need to be addressed before they can be adopted.

Brackenridge  

Wednesday: Al-Anon will meet at 8 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 847 10th Ave. The group offers help and hope for families and friends of alcoholics.

Thursday: The Allegheny Valley Salvation Army and Community Center will distribute free grab-and-go lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the center parking lot, 917 Brackenridge Ave. Free grocery items from Walmart and Aldi will be available. Everyone is welcome.

Nov. 22: The American Legion Entertainment Committee is selling tickets for a $2,500 Christmas cash raffle. Winner will be the 7 p.m. Pa. Pick 3 lottery number. Cost: $10, includes two numbers. Tickets: 724-980-1745 or 724-224-8444.

Buffalo Township

Today: Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will host a drive-through food distribution for anyone in need from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Lernerville Speedway, 313 N. Pike Road. No reservations required. Guests should remain in their vehicles and open their door or trunk and will be served on a first come, first served basis.

Oct. 31: Buffalo Elementary PTO is conducting a spirit wear sale online at tinyurl.com/3r6vhb8d. Pickup: 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3 at the school. Order deadline: Oct. 31.

Cheswick

Freeport

Wednesdays: The Thrift Store Clothing Ministry at Freeport United Methodist Church, 211 Fourth St., will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All items are free, but donations will be accepted. Items available include clothing of all sizes, bedding and window items. Donations of clothing, shoes and boots welcome; must be laundered and free from smoke and pet hair. Wheelchair accessible. Gilpin

Thursday: Gilpin Volunteer Fire Department will host bingo at 7:15 p.m. at the firehall, 113 Firehall Road.

Harrison  

Wednesday: The Becky’s Closet community clothing store at Faith Lutheran Church, 1500 Broadview Blvd., will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Cost: adult tops and bottoms, 50 cents; children’s clothing, 25 cents. Please bring small bills and your own bags. Donations welcome during these hours. Everyone welcome.

Wednesday: The Agape Thrift Shop at Grace United Methodist Church, 1333 Freeport Road, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Clean clothing in all sizes is needed. No housewares or bedding please due to lack of space. Bring donations on Wednesday or leave them on the front porch. Do not place donations in the blue bins behind the church.

Wednesday: Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank will be open from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at 1913 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Food bank participants can receive food allotments twice per month. Those who are not yet registered should come from 3 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Saturday : Community Library of Allegheny Valley will offer a free workshop to make a jug planter of native plants at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd. Penn State Master Gardener Ena Seltzer will lead the workshop. New recipients can register Thursday.

Thursday: The diaper pantry at St. Mark Lutheran Church will distribute free diapers from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church, 600 Pittsburgh St. Advance registration required. First-time recipients must provide their own ID, the child’s birth certificate and a current WIC or SNAP card. Distributions are the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Nov. 15: Springdale Free Public Library is accepting orders for pies and pumpkin rolls from The Pie Shoppe in Laughlintown. Varieties: chocolate meringue, coconut cream meringue, lemon meringue, apple, blackberry, cherry, Dutch apple, harvest, peach, raisin, razzleberry and pumpkin pies, and pumpkin rolls, all $12.
