Sonward Youth program looking for reading tutors
Volunteer tutors are needed by the Sonward Youth program in New Kensington.
Tutors are assigned their own student and will meet in person from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Oct. 1 at the program center, 601 Sixth St. Training and materials are provided.

Volunteers needed for YMCA beautification project
Better Block Foundation, Valley Points Family YMCA, Penn State New Kensington and the Richard King Mellon Foundation invites residents to help paint a mural, build furniture and plant flowers Sept. 21 at the YMCA, 800 Constitution Blvd., New Kensington.
All ages are welcome. Volunteer workshops will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 18 to 20. Event day volunteer workshops will be from 9 to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 21.

Soft plastic recycling project underway
The Highlands Area Rotary and Lions clubs are partnering to collect and recycle soft plastics to get a new bench for the community.
Residents can drop off clean, dry soft plastic items in collection bins located at Community Library of Allegheny Valley and Community Market, both in Harrison, and Salvation Army in Brackenridge.
Items that will be accepted include produce, grocery store and ice bags, recloseable bags like Ziploc, cereal box liners, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, bubble wrap and plastic mailers.
