Two Alle-Kiski Valley teens have been awarded $11,000 each in scholarships for taking first place in the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association Foundation and Community College of Allegheny County’s automotive competition.
Freeport Area High School senior Leroy Zacherly and Armstrong High School senior Ryan Kuntz attend Lenape Technical School. They worked as a team in the automotive competition.
They each received a $10,000 scholarship from the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Association Foundation and a $1,000 scholarship from CCAC’s Educational Foundation.
They also took an expense-paid trip to New York in April to compete in the National Automotive Technology Competition. Each also received a tool kit donated by the Grainger Co.
The students, who participated in a signing ceremony at Lenape last week, will be sponsored by #1 Cochran in Harrison to participate in the Mopar Career Automotive program at CCAC’s West Hills Center. The first part of the automotive competition was held in December, when nine schools and 17 teams competed. The participants completed a 100-question written exam and performed tasks at several hands-on stations to determine the top three teams to compete in the second part of the competition in March.
CCAC’s Manufacturer Automotive Technology Program is designed to prepare students to service and repair today’s automobiles. The two-year program includes 10 weeks of classes and then work in a co-op environment for 10 to 12 weeks for five consecutive semesters.
