Power outages and water woes disrupted school operations Thursday in the Highlands School District in Harrison.

Highlands Middle School students and staff are learning remotely Thursday because of a water main break Wednesday night at the middle school.

Students in grades 5-8 are affected.

The remote day applies to only the middle school, according to a post on the district’s website.

District spokeswoman Jennifer Goldberg said a widespread power outage affected the entire district early Thursday and a two-hour delay is in effect for all students and staff.

Harrison Manager Nick Colledge said Thursday the waterline break at the middle school is internal and the district did not contact the township.

Electric power to the area was restored shortly before 8 a.m. The outage was caused by a transformer fire near Tour-Ed Mine, according to Tarentum Manager Dwight Boddorf.

The power outage affected parts of Tarentum, Brackenridge and Harrison. Boddorf said power was restored in under two hours.

Borough officials urge residents to download the Savvy Citizen app for the latest updates on Redcat Power, Tarentum’s public power distribution system.
