A 36-year-old male was reunited with his family after being rescued from the Allegheny River in New Kensington on Monday afternoon.
The rescue happened near Logans Ferry Road.
Plum Police Sgt. Jay Kapusta said the West Deer resident walked from New Kensington to Plum before getting into the water to swim across the river. Emergency dispatch was called after workers from the Penn Glenn Oil Works heard the man’s distress calls.
Kapusta said it is unknown what prompted the man to swim in the river, but he refused medical treatment on the scene.
First responders from several departments, including the Plum Police and Fire Department, Monroeville Fire Department, a river rescue team and the Logans Ferry Vounteer Fire Department, came to the scene to assist with the rescue and to make sure no one else was with the man.
