Woman taken to hospital after being hit by car on Harrison's Freeport Road

A 64-year-old woman was conscious and talking with paramedics Monday afternoon after being hit by a car on Freeport Road in Harrison, according to township police.

The woman, who was not identified, was hit at the intersection with California Avenue, near Sheetz and CVS, around 4:35 p.m., police said. She was taken by ambulance to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

It’s the same area where Gary Rhebb, 74, of Harrison died after he was hit by a car on Nov. 8.

The driver who hit the woman Monday stayed at the scene and flagged down a passing police officer. He was not hurt, police said.

The four-lane road was briefly shut down.

Police expect to know more Tuesday after reviewing video surveillance of the area.

Harrison officials have been discussing boosting safety for vehicles and pedestrians along Freeport Road. Earlier this month, police Chief Brian Turack described the road’s traffic signals as outdated and working independently of each other.

Many drivers use side streets to avoid the traffic signals, while others frustrated by waiting at red lights with no other vehicles approaching speed up to get through, officials said.

Township commissioners have hired HRG Engineering to come up with a solution to synchronize the lights. Having the lights work together would improve safety by making it so a vehicle doesn’t get stopped at every red light, Turack previously said.
