Three emaciated puppies are getting small amounts of water and food every few hours after they were found Thursday in a box along the Five Star Trail in Greensburg.

A person walking on the trail near Lynch Field found them and Ninth Life Rescue Center took the animals in after being contacted by Hoffman Kennels. Rescue president Jen Johnson said the trio, likely pit bull mixes, are about 8 weeks old.

“They were very dehydrated,” she said. “They’re fighting for the water dish, they’re fighting for the food dish, they’re desperate to get to it.”

Johnson is seeking help from the public in an effort to identify who dumped the animals, and also to help any of the puppies’ siblings or parents. She is offering a cash reward.

After the puppies get used to proper nutrition over the next few days, they’ll get onto a normal eating schedule.

“This definitely didn’t happen overnight,” Johnson said. “I would say they haven’t had proper nutrition within at least two weeks.”

Anyone with information on the puppies is asked to contact Ninth Life at 724-217-4257. Anyone who wants to donate toward their care can visit the center’s Facebook page or ninthliferescue.com/fundraisers.
