Three Hempfield Area High School students tested positive for coronavirus over the past two days, according to Superintendent Tammy Wolicki.

The new cases bring the district total to seven positive cases and three presumptive cases, when someone has been tested but is awaiting results, for the period between Oct. 28 and Nov. 10. That is a decrease from the 21 cases reported between Oct. 21 and Nov. 3.

“The number of positive cases reduced over the past few weeks,” Wolicki said. “The closing of the high school for two weeks may have mitigated the spread. We are also in between fall and winter sports. Three cases in the last two days for the high school are concerning. We are watching closely and hoping that we are not going to see a continued increase.”

Officials closed the high school in October after several students tested positive. The school has since reopened and students have been following a hybrid model of learning, which is a mix of in-person and online classes.

According to a covid-19 tracker posted on the district website, cases reported in the past 14 days at district schools include one student at West Hempfield Elementary School, one staffer at Maxwell Elementary School, one student at West Hempfield Middle School and one staffer at Hempfield Area High School.

Of the presumptive cases, one is a student at Stanwood Elementary and two are students at West Hempfield Middle School.

There are no reported cases at Fort Allen and West Point elementary schools nor at Harrold and Wendover middle schools, according to the tracker. There also are no reported cases among administrators, bus drivers, maintenance workers or food workers.

According to Wolicki, the tracker will be updated to reflect the third high school case at the end of the day Wednesday.
