Let’s get this bread

There’s no shortage of good food to be had at Fort Ligonier Days, including one special treat available on the front lawn of the fort itself.

Baker Justin Cherry has hauled a 3-ton mobile clay oven from his Half Crown Bakehouse in Summerville, S.C., to bake bread similar to what soldiers would have eaten at the fort in the mid-1700s. Samples and loaves will be available for sale from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday, while supplies last each day.

Western Pennsylvania native Cherry grew up in a family of historical reenactors and was a fellow at George Washington’s estate, Mt. Vernon. He is a sous chef at Husk in Charleston, S.C.

Next best thing

Get a double shot of classic rock Friday at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg, with Almost Queen and special guest Philadelphia Freedom: A Tribute to Elton John. The show begins at 8 p.m.

Dressed in replica Queen stage wear, Almost Queen promises an authentic Queen live show with “signature four-part harmonies and intricate musical interludes.” Likewise, Philadelphia Freedom bills itself as “the most realistic Elton John tribute currently touring.”

Tickets are $39-$49, with additional fee if purchased on show date.

Ghosts of the past

With roots going back to the mid-1700s, Ligonier has plenty of history. Do any ghosts of the past linger on its streets these days?

Hear about local residents’ paranormal encounters during Historic Ghost Walks hosted by Diamond Theatre of Ligonier, starting at 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7:30 p.m. Sundays during October.

Walks run every 30 minutes, with the last one leaving at 10:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 9:30 p.m. Sundays. Tickets at $12 each are available at eventbrite.com or at the theater, 210 W. Main St., until all spots are filled.

Last call

Accuweather’s Sunday forecast for Greensburg calls for some sun and a high of 75 degrees. That’s good news for the season’s final antiques and collectibles sale at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield — although the sale goes on rain or shine.

“The 2021 (season) has been a rainy one, with three out of the five sales heavily subdued because of weather or the weather forecast,” said Lisa Hays, executive director of Westmoreland Historical Society, which hosts the sale. “I am hopeful the October event will give buyers and sellers a good opportunity to meet for mutually beneficial exchanges.”

The gate opens at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and parking is $3 per car. The market continues through early afternoon, although some vendors are set up and selling by 1 p.m. Saturday.

Pumpkin playground

The Haunted Drive-Thru at Lonesome Valley Farms Valley of Terror might be too intense for the younger set, but they are likely to enjoy the Pumpkin Patch Playland on site at the Westmoreland Fairgrounds in Mt. Pleasant Township.

The play area, including slides, seesaws, a gravel pit, pedal-powered rides, a spider crawl and more, is open 1-5 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 31. Last ticket is sold at 4 p.m.

Admission is $10 per person, cash only. Children younger than 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
