5 things to do in Westmoreland County this weekend: April 21-23
Chinese musicians
“A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix,” a free concert of traditional Chinese music, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Robert S. Carey Performing Arts Center at Saint Vincent College in Unity.
Featured musicians will be Yazhi Guo on the suona and Zhou Yi on the pipa. The suona is a traditional double-reeded instrument that originated in ancient Iran and appeared in China around the third century; the pipa is a plucked instrument, sometimes referred to as the Chinese lute.
An educator and performer, Yazhi Guo is considered to be the world’s premier suona virtuoso. Zhou Yi has performed around the world as a concert soloist.
The program is presented in conjunction with the college’s James and Margaret Tseng Loe China Studies Center. For information, visit stvincent.edu.
