AHN Cancer Institute Hempfield moves radiation services to Monroeville
Cancer patients of Allegheny Health Network undergoing radiation therapy will no longer be served at AHN Cancer Institute Hempfield.
The move, effective Tuesday, means patients will be directed to the cancer center at AHN Forbes Hospital in Monroeville, according to a statement from the health care system.
The Hempfield location, connected to AHN Hempfield Neighborhood Hospital along Route 30, will continue to provide other cancer treatment services.
AHN public relations director Bill Toland said one patient at the Hempfield location was being transferred to Monroeville.
All other patients at the Hempfield site completed their treatment there before the transition or started their therapy in Monroeville, he said.
A second linear accelerator, a device commonly used in radiation treatments, recently was added at the Monroeville location to meet an increased demand for services there, according to the health system’s statement.
“The decision to transition Hempfield’s radiation therapy services to other AHN locations was driven by the evolving demand for cancer services across the network’s footprint,” the statement said, adding that the health system has expanded cancer-related programs this year at several hospitals around the region.
AHN Hempfield Neighborhood Hospital and the connected cancer institute opened in early 2020. Both were part of AHN’s multi-million dollar expansion in the region. The hospital had been in the works since it was approved by township supervisors in December 2017.
