It might be time to break out the tin foil hats — an alien invasion is taking place in North Huntingdon.
Three silver aliens with glowing green eyes stand at the ready, two holding toy guns, in a neighborhood along Dianthus Street, their spaceship glowing red, white and blue.

The Halloween display was designed and built by Chico Ebbitt, 57, who came up with the idea after spotting the aliens while shopping at Home Depot. After deciding to purchase the aliens, two of which are 3 feet tall and another that is 6 feet tall, he quickly realized that something was missing.
“I’m going to put them in the yard, but then they’re just going to be lost here by themselves,” Ebbitt said. “What else can I do? I’m thinking they need a flying saucer or spaceship, so I took it upon myself to just design it and start building one.”
Ebbitt, who does contracting work, built the spaceship out of wood, foam board and foil faced bubble wrap. Three domes, one red and two blue, are chip bowls. Rope lighting illuminates the ship at night. Ebbitt also reworked the aliens, which had motion sensors and were battery operated, so people would not come into the yard and cause them to move.
“This is the first time I really went sort of crazy with (Halloween decorations) and I don’t know why, but it just felt right with the aliens and stuff,” he said. “I design my own stuff and there’s no blueprint for it or anything, it was out of my own head. It turned out pretty cool. I’m very pleased with it and the neighbors seem to like it, too. It worked out well.”
Ebbitt quickly started to receive recognition for his work, with neighbors acknowledging the project and several people saying they would bring their kids to see it at night.
Ebbitt said he is hopeful people will continue to come and see the display throughout the weekend.
“If you get a chance to come by, please do because that’s what it’s built for,” he said.
