Online retailer Amazon said Monday it will displace 432 of 500 workers at its Findlay sorting center in March as the company makes more than $20 million in improvements at the facility over six to eight months.
The package and delivery giant filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, with the state Department of Labor and Industry on Friday, indicating the moves would begin March 12. Amazon said it would work to place affected employees at other company facilities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties and Ohio.
“All impacted permanent employees at this facility in Pittsburgh (Findlay) are being offered opportunities to transfer to other facilities nearby, as well as support if they choose not to stay with Amazon,” said Steve Kelly, an Amazon spokesman.
Amazon said it is working with the 156 seasonal employees at the center who may want another job with Amazon, to find opportunities that may work for them. If the 273 permanent employees at the center don’t want to stay at Amazon, the company said it is providing job assistance and offering a severance package. Unemployment compensation also would be available.
Amazon plans to make upgrades to the sorting system in the Findlay warehouse, which was built in 2021, Kelly said. The work will ultimately reduce the cost of operations and support faster delivery.
While the work is being done, the center will operate at a reduced level with about 100 employees, Kelly said. Employees at the center sort the packages by ZIP code and send the items to a delivery center, where they are then driven to customers.
Among the possible sites where Amazon workers could transfer are a fulfillment center in Findlay, an inbound cross dock warehouse in New Stanton, sorting centers in Pittsburgh and delivery stations in Sewickley, North Versailles and two in Moon.
When the sorting center reopens in time for deliveries for the holiday shopping season, employees will have the opportunity to reapply for jobs at the site, Amazon said.
