A Salem woman was killed Friday morning in crash on Route 22 in Salem when her vehicle was hit by a flatbed tractor trailer carrying a concrete beam, the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office said.

The victim, Sandy L. Jones, 79, of Old William Penn Highway, died of blunt force injuries as a result of the accident at 10:05 a.m. at the intersection of White Thorn Road and Route 22, the coroner said. Jones was dead at the scene.

Jones was traveling alone in a 2018 Ford Escape when it was hit by a westbound tractor trailer as she attempted to cross the westbound lane of Route 22. She was coming from White Thorn Road, en route to the intersection with Hannastown Road on the other side of Route 22, the coroner said.

The car sustained extensive damage along the driver’s side of the vehicle. The tractor rig hauling the concrete beam ended up off the berm, with the cab pointing in the wrong direction.

Jones was wearing a seat belt and it is not believed that cell phone usage was a factor in the crash, the coroner said.

Westbound traffic was diverted for several hours as state police and coroner’s personnel investigated.

State police did not provide any details.

Forbes Road firefighters responded to the crash.
