A boil-water advisory has been extended as the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County awaits the results of a third precautionary test following a water main break in Ligonier Township on Sunday.
Spokesperson Matt Junker said the latest water sample was taken Wednesday and tests take about 24 hours to get results. He expected to know more about the advisory’s status on Thursday afternoon.
Residents in Ligonier Borough, Laurel Mountain Borough and portions of Ligonier and Fairfield townships have been asked to boil their water since the break, which happened in the Waterford area.
The water main break has been fixed, Junker said. It was underwater near a stream, which made the repair more complicated. The first two sets of water samples came back negative for bacteria.
Junker said the authority typically waits to resume water service after a break until they can test the transmission mainline, but because customers in higher elevations were starting to lose pressure, officials decided to forgo testing first.
Two water samples must test negative for bacteria consecutively on two different days before normal water service can resume.
