Colorful drawings and uplifting messages will cover the Lincoln Avenue Trail in Latrobe on Saturday, as Latrobe-GLSD Parks & Recreation and Latrobe Art Center host a free art activity.
“Chalk the Walk” is scheduled for 9 a.m.-7 p.m. all along the trail that runs the length of Lincoln Avenue, from Depot Street to Hillview Avenue.
Murrysville Recreation Department also will host “Chalk the Walk” from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the walking trail in Murrysville Community Park. Fee is $10 to reserve a 4-by-4-foot space, with proceeds to benefit the Murrysville Parks and Recreation Foundation’s trail painting project in the park. Chalk will be provided.
DJ Joe will spin tunes, while treats will be available from Kona Ice.
“The weather is supposed to be nice, and we thought it would be nice to get people outside to use some of their creative juices,” said Latrobe-GLSD Parks & Recreation Executive Director Craig Shevchik.
“They can draw some spring and summer themes and leave some positive, inspiring messages for the walkers or people out walking their dogs,” he said.
People can visit the Latrobe trail at any time during the day to add their creations. Those who don’t have their own chalk can get free packets from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each day this week at the Parks & Rec office, 901 Jefferson St., while supplies last.
Chalk is the only medium allowed for the art project, Shevchik noted.
The Latrobe art activity is among a number of joint annual projects, including children’s summer art classes, hosted by the Parks & Rec department and Latrobe Art Center, said art center Executive Director Michael Tusay. The center’s member artists have been invited to come out and add their own creations to the walk.
“We’re always looking for ways to bring art into the community,” Tusay said.
“We want to show people that parks and rec is about more than just sports,” Shevchik said.
