The Derry Borough Municipal Building, including the Derry Volunteer Fire Company station, is seen on June 19, 2023, along East Second Avenue in Derry.

Derry residents are eligible to receive a free smoke alarm installation May 10.

The Derry Volunteer Fire Department is teaming up with Friends of Derry and the Chestnut Ridge and Allegheny Mountains Chapter of the American Red Cross on the initiative.

To schedule an appointment for installation, call 833-315-0882 or submit a request online at soundthealarm.org/greaterpa.

In about 43% of the home fire deaths that occurred nationwide between 2018 and 2022, no smoke alarms were present, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Fire departments nationwide responded to nearly 337,000 home structure fires in each of those four years.
