Six horses were rescued from a barn at a horse ranch near Scottdale Monday as it was destroyed in a fire, said East Huntingdon Fire Chief Brian Kite.

“The horses were rescued by the owners,” he said. “They went in the barn and got them all out.”

The fire was reported before 6 p.m. on Regency Lane at Regency Horse Ranch, west of Scottdale off Chaintown Road. Firefighters pulled water from a lake on the property and a fire hydrant about a half mile from the barn, Kite said.

Wind made putting out the large blaze difficult. Numerous firefighters from area companies were called in to help. One firefighter had a hand injury.

“That was probably our fight, was the wind,” Kite said.

The barn was built in the 1800s, he said. It was a total loss.

The cause and origin is undetermined.
