A tree is planted at Hempfield Park on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, 2024.

Free flowering dogwood tree saplings will be handed out April 30 in Jeannette.

The West Penn Power Green Team has 250 saplings to give away in honor of Earth Day. The saplings, which will have white flowers, will be available from 9 a.m. until noon at the community garden at the intersection of Clay Avenue and South Seventh Street.

Dogwoods are a low-growing species native to Pennsylvania that don’t interfere with overhead utility lines.

FirstEnergy, the parent company of West Penn, has planted more than 100,000 trees across its service area. The company’s goal this year is to plant or give away 25,000 trees, with many being directed to underserved communities such as Jeannette.
