Franklin Regional officials will hold a groundbreaking for the new Franklin Regional Intermediate Elementary School on Wednesday, July 31.
The $49 million project, which has generated debate, controversy and a legal appeal, includes the renovation of the existing Sloan Elementary — which will be converted into a school for children in kindergarten through second grade — and the construction of the intermediate elementary, for grades 3 to 5.
The groundbreaking will be at 6:30 p.m. on the Sloan campus, 4121 Sardis Road in Murrysville.
Oral arguments in the Sloan Project Concerned Citizens’ legal appeal — which seeks to challenge Murrysville Council’s approval of the project — are slated for 10 a.m., Aug. 21 in Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court in Greensburg.
The citizen group asserts that Murrysville Council did not place sufficient conditions on the project to protect public health, safety and welfare.
