The Greensburg Art Center will host its annual member artwork showcase and teach a Cafe Art class on a unique painting method.
About 100 people are submitting about 200 pieces of art to the free showcase — including photography, pottery, sculptures and painting. The event will run from Jan. 20 to March 1, said chairperson Rose Sovyak.
“It’s actually kind of fun, because we celebrate our membership,” Sovyak said. “We have a great group of people who love to promote art.”
An opening reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 20 at the art center, located at 230 Todd School Road in Hempfield.
Following the reception, the show can be viewed at the art center during its regular hours — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday — or by participating in the center’s free Cafe Art class from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 4.
The Cafe Art class, taught by Sovyak, will instruct participants in window screen painting.
Sovyak said she learned about the technique while visiting the American Museum of Visual Art in Baltimore. It provides those inside an unobstructed view while those looking at the screen from outside see a painting.
Co-chairperson Nancy Rusbosin hopes the member show encourages people to explore their artistic abilities.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad, beginner or a professional,” Rusbosin said. “I think doing art with others creates a flexibility in your mind that you never had before.”
Rusbosin has been a member of the art center for about two years. She will submit to the show her landscape oil paintings in the impressionistic abstract style. One piece depicts the view she witnessed while driving through fog and snow on her way home from spending New Year’s Eve with her sister in Laurel Mountain.
“I’m especially excited to see the latest creations — what everybody’s latest artwork is,” Rusbosin said.
