Greensburg Garden Center member Terry Rodgers of Greensburg prepares plants for the annual May Mart.

Shoppers at Greensburg Garden Center’s annual May Mart plant sale will find themselves in a new and improved space.

The center’s garden recently was refurbished by Cole Kuczynski of Greensburg as an Eagle Scout project. Kuczynski and his helpers removed old compost and debris, built a wire compost bin, refurbished benches and potting tables, mulched planting beds, and cleaned wheelbarrows and other implements.

He even mowed the grounds, said center co-president Carla Rusnica: “We’re really happy with the way the garden cleaned up.”

The sale is noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the garden house and grounds at the bottom of the parking lot behind the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center, 951 Old Salem Road.

The center will offer perennials and herbs for sale, along with a gardening information booth, a small fleatique of gardening items and accessories and a limited number of hypertufa planting containers made by members.

These additional vendors will be present:

• Drew Graham of the Greater Pittsburgh Dahlia Society will be on hand to sell dahlia tubers and answer questions.

• Hanging baskets and planted containers suitable for Mother’s Day giving will be available from Greenhouse 22 of Ford City.

• Garden Center member Robert McDonald will sell houseplants, zinnias and marigolds.

• Greensburg Hempfield Area Library will host a used book sale.

• A $5 meal deal will include a hot dog from Bardine’s Country Smokehouse in Crabtree, chips, water and a cookie homemade by center members.

Wand flowers will be among perennials for sale at the Greensburg Garden Center May Mart.

Due to the pandemic, last year’s sale included phone and online ordering with curbside pickup. That option is available again this year, Rusnica said. For information, call 724-837-0245 or visit greensburggardencenter.net.

For people who are unable to attend in person, “We’ll accept orders for perennials through May 4 for pickup later,” she said.

Philadelphia Flower Show bus trip

The center also is planning a June 11 bus trip to the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, which will be held outdoors this year in FDR Park June 5-13. Show theme is “HABITAT: Nature’s Masterpiece,” and the event will feature displays and activities for gardeners, plant enthusiasts and design aficionados.

Cost of the bus trip is $145, or $135 for members. For information and reservations, call 724-837-0245.
